June 2023 Ergos Master Class Review: I was deeply nourished and powerfully transformed by my recent training experience with Peter Levine and Ergos. I felt emotionally held by the overall therapeutic container and the beautiful grounds. Peter and the assistants delivered a high standard of clinical training, and I appreciated how well-organized the week was and much time was set aside for experiential work and practice. Peter's client demonstrations, 12 in all, were deeply moving and brought the work down to a very practical and applied level. I returned home with my own Smovey rings and a six-foot attachment stick! I am deeply grateful to the staff of Ergos for making this training possible. - Steven

SE Master Class Intensive
Patterns, Presence, and Practice
Embracing the Therapeutic Rhythm and Connection of SE

We invite the SE community to Dr Levine’s new SE Master Class Intensive, where you can learn from watching him work and connect with like-minded peers in discussion and practice. This new program is designed to benefit seasoned SE Practitioners and those early in their training (Beg II+).

SE is not what you do, but how you do what you do.
— Dr Levine

In each session, we guide our clients through multiple phases of grounding, activation, pendulation, titration, release, orientation, and settling. During these phases, we are expected to be fully present, connect deeply, know when a cycle has been completed, and know how to move forward. As we develop as SE practitioners, we realize that those expectations may not always be a reality. Hence, it is crucial for the success of our clients that we seek guidance on how to recover from misattunement gracefully and how we can be vulnerable while authentically establishing ourselves as committed partners in healing. We will animate this immersive class together by dissecting similar struggles and triumphs, allowing us to dive deeper into an SE session's intrinsic rhythms and connection.

With a focus on the following therapeutic lessons:

  • Patterns

  • Uncertainty and Stuckness

  • Presence, Rhythm, and Connection

  • Practice, Support, and Modality Integration

This SE Master Class will include the following:

  • Lessons w/ Dr Levine

  • Live client session demonstration w/ Dr Levine

  • In-depth debrief w/ Dr Levine & Dr Sylvae

  • Client session deconstruction video review w/ Dr Sylvae, highlighting Dr Levine’s methods used for specific interventions, including his missteps, fumbles, and recoveries

  • Supervised practices within your SE Level

  • Supervised small group discussions of common struggles and triumphs, with others practicing within your Scope of Practice

  • Tools to help Practitioners reduce the risk of burnout

Patterns

Our collective healing practices often involve exploring and identifying patterns within an individual's thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and bodily sensations. These include other facets of the human experience, like transgenerational patterns, illnesses, and near-death experiences. By recognizing and understanding how these valuable insights may connect, you can gain access to the underlying issues, develop regulation strategies, and work toward lasting growth.

Together we will tackle core issues like,

  • What patterns do you notice arising with a client as you first integrate SE into your sessions?

  • What patterns do you notice after you have been using SE with a client over time?

  • Do you notice somatic or behavioral patterns but are unsure of the reason?

  • What emotions and behaviors are associated with these patterns, and how can we explore them safely?

  • Do you, as a practitioner, ever feel stuck with a client—are there common "stuck" themes within yourself?

Uncertainty and Stuckness

All healing practitioners, even Dr Levine, can experience insecurities and doubts related to their work. Uncertainty about complex therapeutic interventions and fears of not meeting client expectations are common. Sometimes we may question if we are correctly adhering to ethical guidelines or staying up-to-date with the latest research and therapeutic approaches. Comparing ourselves to colleagues or renowned experts in the field, feeling inadequate in comparison, can also be a struggle. In addition, concerns related to transference and countertransference, personal biases, or unresolved issues can interfere with our ability to be truly present with our clients.

As much as a practitioner may understand the theories and tools of SE, we can also meet a fair amount of resistance and “stuckness” in clients and ourselves. How to work with the resistance to access and explore the journey of interoception is one of the most commonly asked questions to Dr Levine during all levels of his programs.

By fostering a connection with others in the SE community and watching the deconstruction of client demonstrations, we will explore ways to tackle the obstacles built by uncertainty and stuckness.

Presence, Rhythm, and Connection

Bringing therapeutic presence into your practice involves cultivating focused awareness, compassion, and attunement to the client's needs. This skill can be enhanced over time through practice, self-reflection, and ongoing professional development. It involves being fully engaged, nonjudgemental, trustworthy, emotionally available, flexible, validating, and attuned to the client's experiences. By embodying therapeutic presence and empathy, practitioners can create a healing and transformative space for clients to explore and process their thoughts, emotions, and challenges.

Therapeutic rhythm is the intentional use of rhythmic patterns, movements, or activities to promote healing, self-expression, and personal growth. With SE, we can harness the inherent qualities of rhythm, including repetition, synchronization, and predictability, to create a therapeutic container for clients that has a soothing and grounding effect.

Facilitating connection in therapy is crucial for establishing a solid therapeutic alliance and creating a safe and supportive space for clients to explore their thoughts, emotions, and challenges. Building connection is an ongoing process that requires effort and attunement. Each client is unique, and how a connection is established may vary. By practicing skills that improve empathy, active listening, validation, trustworthiness, and a genuine desire to understand and support clients “where they are now,” practitioners can create a solid therapeutic connection that promotes healing and growth.

Practice, Support, and Modality Integration

Skill development and building supportive therapeutic alliances with others in the field allow practitioners to develop and refine their SE tools, build a solid therapeutic foundation, and enhance their self-awareness and professional growth. These relationships increase competence and effectiveness as practitioners.

One of the powers of SE is that it can be applied to a variety of healing fields, and one of the struggles of SE is how to do this effectively. During and beyond your SE training, you will discover how to integrate this work into your practice through trial and error. Luckily, this unique Master Class will allow you to connect with others in similar fields to share your struggles and triumphs. With Faculty support and Master Level Assistant supervision, you will have the opportunity to share and grow together.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply interoceptive awareness and somatic resonance tracking more precisely

  • Analyze and refine perceptual skills and practical tools to create more presence, rhythm, and connection
