Many Somatic Experiencing® practitioners struggle to help individuals who present with a seemingly endless array of unpredictable, labile and mutating symptoms. These conditions include migraines, vertigo, rapid heart rate, heart arrhythmias, POTTS (rapid heartbeat and fainting), chronic pain, regional complex pain syndrome (CRPS), fibromyalgia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), asthma and, particularly certain auto-immune conditions. These syndromes are often associated with various anxiety and depressive, and mood disorders. These autoimmune disorders appear to be associated with neglect, early attachment difficulties, as well as molestation and sexual abuse.

It is important to recognize that these perplexing symptoms have a common root as a single underlying syndrome involving core dysregulation of the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis.  This system influences, in turn, autonomic, endocrine, and immune functions throughout the body.  Rather than chasing after individual symptoms, we uncover the underlying stress conditions that are of the root cause of this dysregulation. If these stress conditions can be identified, then they can then be effectively treated by utilizing special SE techniques. During this class, you will learn about important concepts such as autonomic balance, tuning, and kindling. We will learn how to identify the syndromes of core dysregulation, understand their underlying dynamics, and learn how to work with them using Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory as a guide.

In preparation for an exciting, forthcoming project, Dr. Levine is restructuring this Master Class to be held entirely online using videos and live interaction including exercises.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe Syndromes in relation to the Polyvagal Theory

  • Practice skeletal and visceral afferents to modulate efferent activity and central nervous system homeostasis.

  • Define autonomic dysregulation syndrome and understand the basis of these syndromes.

  • Discuss how to address various syndromes by altering peripheral--feedback via somatic and visceral afferents.

  • Tell how to support clients in understanding the functional nature of their symptoms through “psycho-education.”

  • Practice working with Energy wells through sound, exploration, movement, and diaphragms

We hope to see your face online soon!

Note: If you are in “impossible” time zones like Australia and China we will reach out before the class to make arrangements for you to be able to participate and still get some rest. This is not open to European/other time zones as we have limited capacity to offer this. The live portion of the class ends at 1pm Pacific each day, except the last day we check back in 5:15pm-6pm Pacific (schedule below). Ending at 1pm accommodates Europeans but the last day will be late for them so we are sending ALL students the recording of ALL the days the following week after editing. Note: Approx 4 hrs of Video review each day will be on your own time allowing for European time zones to participate in the live portions (9am-1pm Pacific) and watch the recording the following day before class. Clarification needed will happen in the opening remarks.
